5/4/2017
We're midway through the 4th quarter already! I can't believe that this year has been flying by so quickly. We've had quite an exciting couple of weeks and we're in the home stretch.
First Communion
First off, I wanted to take the time to thank all of you parents for helping your child get ready for First Communion. I know there is a lot of behind the scenes work that is done at home (banner square, learning the prayers, etc.) and you all were great! A BIG, BIG, BIG thanks to the students who are the real stars and practiced very hard. I hope everyone had a blessed day and enjoyed time with family after this exciting occasion. We were able to celebrate by going bowling on Monday afternoon- the kids had a blast! Take a look at the pictures below. THANKS AGAIN!
Math
We are finishing up our LAST unit in math next week... I can't believe it! Unit 7 focuses on arrays, equal shares, number line diagrams, and adding/subtracting lengths. Our last test will be next Thursday (5/11). A test alert/review was sent home earlier this week. Please have your child complete the review and bring it back to school by next week Tuesday.
Science
We have been able to learn about the body parts of a caterpillar, see them become a chrysalis, and now we have butterflies! We're beginning to learn the various parts of a butterfly and have been discussing the lifecycle of a butterfly. The kids are in charge of feeding them- make sure to ask them what they eat!
Writing
We are finishing up our weather posters this week and will be able to share them with our class soon after. They've worked hard on organizing their poster so that it looks neat and includes all of the requirements. We've learned a lot about working as a team and allowing everyone to get a chance to contribute.
Reading
This week, we're having our unit celebration on characters. Each child will pick a favorite book character from a book they've read this quarter. They will then draw/paint him/her and include some character traits that fit their character. After we celebrate, we will continue along and start another nonfiction unit. We're diving in a bit further to learn some more components of nonfiction.
In other news...
My time with the kiddos is coming to a close. I have had such a blast getting to know each of your children and can't believe how much they have grown over these past months. Friday, May 12th, will be my last day with them as I will then be on maternity leave. Mr. B and Mrs. Sinkula will be filling in for me during the rest of the year; Mr. B will be in the room when Mrs. Sinkula is running her 3k classroom. I will be having an "end of the year" celebration with them on that Friday to celebrate all of their accomplishments over the year.
THANK YOU ALL FOR SUCH A GREAT YEAR!
Important Events:
May 16-18 - Shadow days at SMS!
May 29th - No school!

I'm sure that I'm not alone in this, but I am so thankful for spring and warmer weather! We're busy, busy, busy in second grade and are getting ready for First Communion!
Math:
A test alert will be coming home today for unit 6. This unit has covered three-digit addition and subtraction along with more work on story problems. We've been working hard on staying focused during this end of the year stretch.
Science:
We've begun our lifecycle of butterflies unit and the kids LOVE it. Caterpillars arrived today and we're making preparations to take care of them and to help them flourish in our classroom. A lot of pictures will be posted on St. Mary's Facebook page so please keep your eyes peeled!
Writing:
The kiddos are working in partner to create a research poster that focuses on a type of weather disaster. They're learning and practicing how to research using books and websites. Their poster will be done on a computer so they will also be working on fine-tuning their computer skills.
Reading:
We're continuing to work through book clubs and learning about characters. The kids have done a great job staying focused in their Daily 5 rotations. Today the kids will get to become grammar doctors as they perform contraction surgery for our grammar unit. We've also started to work on our fluency skills by having "Fluency Fridays". During these days, the kids visit various rotations that allow them to practice fluency skills by reading poetry, practicing reader's theater, timing their reading, and using different character voices as they read. They seem to really enjoy it!
In other news:
First Communion is coming up quickly!!! Please continue to practice the prayers with your children that were sent home this week. Tina Engebose, the religious educator for students at the public school, holds practices on Saturdays. If you're interested in attending one of these practices, please let me know and I can get you in contact with Tina. I will be sending home a packet of information regarding pictures and seating arrangements this upcoming week.

Math:
A test review and alert was sent home earlier this week for unit 5. We will be having the test on Monday (3/6). This unit includes telling time (AM vs. PM, and hours/minutes), bar graphs, and picture graphs. We've continued working hard in our rotations and are learning a lot! I hope some kiddos are starting to use Prodigy at home (if your child hasn't told you about it, please ask!). It's a wonderful resource that can be set up specifically for whatever skills your child would like to work on.
Social Studies:
Landform maps are beginning to make their way home! I hope the kids had a fun time making these. Our next unit is focusing on Earth's resources and the seasons.
Writing:
The kids are in the process of writing a biography on one of their classmates. They practiced interviewing them and learned the difference between an autobiography and a biography. They're in the process of putting their books together. When they're finished, they will be sent home so please keep your eyes peeled!
Reading:
This is the last week that we will be working on our nonfiction unit. We will be moving into our next reading unit which deals with characters, characters, and MORE characters. We will be learning how to infer characters' feelings, talk about characters' personality traits, discuss how characters overcome challenges, predict characters' actions, examine how characters change throughout a story, and infer what a character has learned from an experience.
Religion:
Each child did great with their First Confession! We're now starting to prepare ourselves for First Communion. Please don't forget about the parent meeting set up for this Sunday (3/5) in the parish hall.
I sent a letter home a couple of weeks ago stating if your child needed to send a copy of their baptismal certificate so that Father could make a copy for his records. **You only received a letter if we needed a copy. If you are still missing yours, I'll send a reminder email home early next week. Please turn those in as soon as you are able. If you are unsure as to if you need to turn in a copy, please call/email me.

Social Studies:
We're beginning to learn a lot about landforms and your child will be making their very own landform map soon! They're really excited about this and put a lot of effort into it. I sent home a letter last week asking for some donations, if you're willing, to help make these maps. Each child will need to bring in their own poster board to use. If this is a problem, please let me know.
Writing:
We have just completed our New Year's Resolution writing activity and they are hanging up outside of our room. For this unit, they all got to type up their paper in the computer lab after editing their rough draft. We focused a lot on how to edit papers and make our writing the best it can be! I'm very proud of them- please stop on by to read them if you can!
Reading:
We are almost done with our unit on nonfiction texts. We've read a lot of really cool stories so far and have learned a lot! Writing:
We have begun our Christmas around the world writing unit. During each writing class we will talk about a different country and how they celebrate Christmas. They will be filling out an information sheet on each country. We will compile these sheets into a "Christmas Around the World" book which will be laminated for our class.

Happy fall! We're cruising right along and learning a lot in our second grade classroom!
In math we've begun our second unit which involves adding large numbers, beginning our discussion on money, place value, and greater than, less than, or equal to signs. They're doing great in our math rotations. Continue to use Prodigy at home!
In reader's workshop, we are talking about comparing and contrasting stories by talking about their key story elements. Characters, settings, beginning, middle, and end are all being discussed as we talk about different fiction books.
In social studies we're talking about communities and cardinal directions. They're finishing up their compass project this week. Look for it to come home by next week.
We're finishing up our pumpkin research paper. This was our first paper where they got to do some research and work in partners to write all about pumpkins. They had a blast! We will have our publishing party soon to celebrate all of their hard work!
We had a great time at our Halloween social. Thank you so much to Home and School for providing the popcorn and water for us. We watched Monsters University! The costumes were all FANTASTIC!
Keep up all of the hard work and I look forward to seeing you all at conferences today and tomorrow.

Hello!
We've had a great start to the school year. I can’t believe this month flew by so quickly. It has been a blast getting to know all of your children! Here's what we have going on in our classroom:
- Science: We are learning about the moon! We’ve discussed gravity (and even made a moon ball), reflectors, rotation vs. revolution, and the speed of light. Make sure to ask your child about what types of experiments we’ve done in the classroom.
- Math: We have begun our math workshop. We use centers in math workshop so that students get a chance to practice their skills using a variety of tools such as our tablets, manipulatives, and white boards. One rotation is working with the teacher, another is using math manipulatives while working in their math book, and the last rotation is working on fact fluency by playing a math game or using Prodigy (please let me know if you need help signing up for this at home). We’re working through unit 1 which includes concepts like odd and even numbers, equation chains, adding together three or four addends, math mountains, and word problems. The BIG IDEA of unit 1 is addition and subtraction within 20. The kids have been doing a good job learning the expectations for math centers. Our first math test will be coming up in a couple of weeks. I’ll keep you posted on when that will be!
- Reader's/Writer's Workshop: The kiddos told me that they used the daily 5 rotation set up in first grade so we were able to jump right in! Each child was given a reading group and I meet with each group every day during one of their rotations. During their time with me, we work on grammar, phonics (correlates to their spelling list for the week), and on Unit 1. The typical schedule is that on Monday we do phonics, Tuesday and some Thursdays we do grammar work, and on Wednesday, some Thursdays, and Friday, we work on unit 1 topics. Unit 1 is teaching us how to make predictions, retell a story, compare and contrast similar stories, identify cause and effect, distinguish between fact and opinion, and identify characters, settings, problems, and solutions. Whew! That seems like a lot!
In our writer’s workshop we have just finished our first final draft piece. The kids wrote a sequence of events paragraph on how they get ready for school. They got to make a title page for their work when their final draft was all done. We will have our publishing party on Friday of this week (10/7) where the kiddos will get to share their hard work with the class and we will have some treats. Their paragraphs will be hanging out in the hallway so you can stop and see them at the fall open house! Their next writing assignment will be all about pumpkins and will involve group research.
- Spelling: I hope Spelling City is a good resource for you to utilize at home. Please have your children study their spelling words whenever they have some free time. Keep up the good work! If you ever have any questions about how I grade spelling tests, please let me know!
Halloween Social- Our Halloween social will be on Friday, 10/28 at 1pm. We will be having popcorn (thanks to our Home and School Organization) and will watch a movie. Kids are more than welcome to bring a costume to school, however; we ask that they change into their costume after mass. If you would like to bring a treat in for our Halloween party, feel free!
Unhomework- I hope that our unhomework plan is going alright at home. If at any point you have any questions or concerns about it, please let me know! From what it sounds like, the kids are enjoying the activities and I’m pleased that I’m receiving a lot of homework tickets by the end of the week. Keep up the great work!
Important dates:
Wednesday, 10/12 - Open House
Thursday, 10/15- Picture Retakes
Friday, 10/21- No School
Friday, 10/28 - Halloween Social
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email or call!

5/3/16
Our countdown until these wonderful second graders become third graders has begun! I can hardly believe that it's May already and I only have a little over a month left with these kiddos. They have made my first year of teaching a great one, and they are all truly great kids.
Science
We were able to watch our caterpillars make their chrysalis and then FINALLY emerge as butterflies. Now instead of just observing, the kids are also in charge of making sure the butterflies are being fed. They have learned how to make their sugar water and enjoy putting their hand in the butterfly cage to fill up their food. We've only had one butterfly escape so far! :) The kids are enjoying observing the painted lady butterflies. We will keep them for another week before we release them. This has been such a fun unit!
Math
The students just took their unit 6 test last week and I was so proud of how well they all did. We've now moved onto our LAST math unit for this school year. We'll be learning about arrays, equal shares, and relating addition and subtraction to length.
Reading Workshop
In reading, we have begun making our reading detective briefcase. We're taking the time to analyze our guided reading books by discussing and analyzing the characters, setting, plot, and determining if we think it is a good book or not. The kids are very excited to bring home their briefcase for you to see!
Writing Workshop
For our latest writing activity, the kids wrote about their favorite activity to do in the spring. Their writing is currently hanging outside of our classroom, but will be sent home for you to read soon! The next activity that's planned is for the kids to write a paper to future second graders letting them know what to expect.
First Communion
Thanks to everyone who helped the second graders prepare for their First Holy Communion. Special thanks goes out to Mr. B, Mrs. Zellner, Mrs. Delebreau, Father Suess, and most importantly, to the second graders and YOU (their parents). They worked very hard to prepare for such an important even in their lives. I'm very proud of them!
Important Dates:
May 1st-6th - MAPS testing (Reading and Math)
May 9th-11th - MAPS testing (Language Arts)
May 9th-13- Mass parts this week
May 16th - JDRF walk
May 26th - Pete Petoniak visit
May 30th - No school

Happy spring! I know the weather's cold and it's not feeling like much of a spring, but we can only get warmer from here! We have been very busy with a lot of fun and exciting happenings in the classroom.
Science
We will be starting our lifecycles of butterflies unit this week. The kids are very excited to get our caterpillars in this week. As soon as the caterpillars arrive, we will need to get food ready for them and set up their habitats. I'm sure the kiddos will be eager to share what we learn and observe as the caterpillars grow.
Math
We just completed our Unit 5 test about graphs and telling time. Look for your child's test to come home on Friday! I was very pleased with how the class did. Our next unit focuses on adding to 1000 and three digit subtraction.
Reading Workshop
In reading, we are beginning our non fiction unit. We have begun taking a look at various text features and why they're important. We're also learning how to determine whether something is fact or opinion. So far we've read a very interesting article about mummies!
Writing Workshop
Our publishing party for our leprechaun story was on Wednesday. The kids were very excited to share their stories. In this piece, we focused on making sure our stories had a clear beginning, middle, and end. We also practiced indenting to make our paragraphs stand out. The kids were able to use our school's computers to make a title page for their story. Pictures are below of our publishing party! Our next piece of writing will be about our favorite things to do in spring.
First Communion
I can't believe that we're less than two weeks away from First Communion. The kids have been practicing a lot and have been working very hard to prepare for this special occasion. Please make sure to have any information that was needed back (from the packet sent home on Monday) by April 11th. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know! Keep having your child practice the two prayers that were sent home as well.
Important Dates:
April 5th - End of 3rd Quarter
April 14th - Report cards will be sent home
April 17th- First Communion
April 18th - First Communion bowling party
April 22nd - No school

March
3/2/16
Spring is right around the corner! We are so excited for warmer temperatures! March is going to be a very busy for everyone as we have many important dates this month.
-Science: Next week, we will start our next Einstein unit on butterflies. This is a very exciting unit for the kids to be a part of! From what I’ve been hearing, this is certainly a favorite of the kiddos. We will be receiving our caterpillars next Monday and will observe their life cycle as they turn into butterflies.
- Math: Unit 4 will be wrapping up this week as we have our test on Friday. The kids have been working very hard during this unit as we learn addition/subtraction strategies. In our next unit, we will be learning how to tell time, doing work with graphs, and continuing to work with word problems.
- Reader's/Writer's Workshop: We continue to work on reading strategies and learn about character development. We have been focusing on how to determine what a character’s point of view is, and comparing their point of view to other characters’ points of view. In writing, we just finished up our love letters. Look for those to be coming home soon. They were very sweet! Our next writing piece will be about a leprechaun, a lucky charm, and recess. I don’t want to give too much away, but make sure you ask your child about it!
-Religion: We’re getting closer and closer to the First Communion date. Father has set the parent meeting date and a letter was sent home last week about what to expect. I have a video of a past First Communion service that I will be sending home with your child to review. I only have one copy, so please do not keep the DVD longer than 1 or 2 nights. This way, everyone will get a chance to watch it. We are getting very excited for this event.
Yesterday we went on our field trip to the Children’s Museum in Appleton. THANK YOU SO MUCH to our chaperones! The kids had a blast exploring the museum, and from what I’ve been hearing, really enjoyed their class about continents. I’ll put some pictures of the kids working during their class. The teacher at the museum made sure to let us know that the kids were one of the best behaved groups they have had.
Important dates:
March 1- Field Trip to the Children’s Museum
February 29- March 4- Dr. Seuss Week
March 6 - Parent Meeting at 6pm
March 21-25 - No School
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email or call! Hooray, Spring is on its way!

February Blog
2/3/16
We've had a very busy January and are excited for all of the fun events coming up in February! As you all know, we've been enjoying Catholic School Week. I know the kids are having a blast with all of the activities that we have planned for this special time of the year. Thank you so much to all of the kids, staff, and parents for making it such a wonderful week! Here's what has been going on in our classroom:
Math - We're diving head first into our unit with subtraction. So far the kids have been doing a great job and are willing to try new methods to help them solve two - three digit subtraction problems. We're still using our math centers which have been working out great!
Writing - The kids are finishing up their five paragraph paper that they've been working so hard on. I'm so proud of them! The paper is on how animals hibernate for winter. They did some research and learned about migrating, hibernating, and adapting. They've finished up their introductions and are working on their body paragraphs and conclusions. We will have our publishing party soon!
Social Studies- We're finishing up our third social studies unit. So far the kids have learned about Christopher Columbus (ask them what year Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue!), the American Revolution, the Civil War, the Declaration of Independence, freedom, slavery, and pioneers. Our test will be next week; look for a test alert to come home very soon!
Reader's Workshop - We're focusing on character traits this month! Students have been learning how to tell how characters are feeling by making inferences. We're finishing up our group read aloud book, "Socks", and will be starting a new book very soon! Our grammar lessons this month focus on adverbs!
Religion- We're preparing to have the kids have their first confession on Tuesday, February 9th. This will take place during their religion class with Father. Please keep having them practice their Act of Contrition prayer. Thank you to those who have already sent in their Baptismal certificates (if you received a letter from me). If you have yet to send in a copy, please do so as soon as you are able.
We were very sad to have had to cancel our field trip to the Children's Museum because of the weather. We have already rescheduled this field trip for Tuesday, March 1st. The times will remain the same. You will receive more information on this field trip in your Thursday folder this week; please keep your eyes peeled!

February 1st- 5th: Catholic Schools Week
February 5th- Valentine's Day party!!

I can hardly believe that Christmas is almost here! I hope you all had a blessed Thanksgiving with all of your family and friends. We’ve been busy and are starting to get very excited for the Christmas season.
Here’s what we are working on in our classroom:
Math - We’re continuing to push forward in math, we’ve begun Unit 2 (place value, double-digit addition, and money). Now that we are all very comfortable with our math routine, we’re cruising right along!
Science - In science, we are continuing to learn about the moon. The moon journals have been looking great! It’s hard during the Fall/Winter season to have clear enough skies to see the moon, but I greatly appreciate you helping your child to use other technology in order to complete their moon journals. Thanks!
Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop: In reading, we’re continuing to work in our guided reading groups which focus on various reading strategies. The kids are getting a chance to learn sign language in their word work station- ask them if they can sign any of their spelling words for you! In our writer’s workshop, we’re in the beginning stages of planning and writing our rough drafts of our opinion writing pieces. The reindeer went on strike, so it’s up to the kids to pick an animal that can replace the reindeer. They need to state their opinion of what animal should replace the reindeer and then come up with reasons/ideas that support their opinion.
Handwriting: We’re about to get into cursive writing- the kids are very excited! I’m sure you might have noticed that some of them write their name in cursive on their homework. It’s great practice!
Spelling: As a reminder, each child’s spelling menu and corresponding spelling homework is due every Friday of each week. Whatever point value they turn into me, is the grade they will receive for their homework grade. I’ve explained to them that it’s a good idea to try to get 1 homework assignment done each night so that they don’t end up having to do all of their homework on Thursday night. I hope the assignment choices on that menu are fun for your child!
**I sent home a letter home last week about our classroom Christmas party. If you did not receive this letter, please send me an email and I’ll forward you a copy. The letter was about our classroom gift exchange.
Important Dates:
December 11th - Midterm
December 17th - Christmas program at 6:30PM
December 21st-22nd - Second grade has mass parts.
December 22nd - Classroom Christmas party!!
December 23rd- January 1st - Christmas Break (No School). Merry Christmas!!
And now for the good stuff… pictures!

Hello!
I cannot believe that the end of the first quarter is tomorrow. Time has been flying by! We have a lot of exciting things coming up!
- Social Studies: We are finishing up our mini-lesson on landforms and Earth. This week students are making their own landform maps; I know they are looking forward to getting messy! Look for pictures on the Saint Mary’s Facebook page.
-Science: We will be starting our first science unit (Moon) in the next couple of weeks. I know the kids are all very excited!
- Math: We will be finishing up our first math unit next week. Look for a test alert to be sent home about a week before the first test. I’m planning on sending home a test review that your child can practice with. The questions that are on this test review will be very similar to what is on our test.
- Reader's/Writer's Workshop: We have finally started our guided reading groups! I meet with a guided reading group each day of the week and we discuss a reading strategy. On the day that we meet, I give them a book that we will read together and work on practicing our reading strategy. These books can be brought home and the students know that they should practice with these books in their read to self and read to someone rotations
- Spelling: Spelling has been going great! As you know, I have started to utilize Spelling City (spellingcity.com). Every Monday I will be updating your child’s list so that you or your child can utilize many of the great activities that are on Spelling City. If you’re unsure of how you can use this at home, please let me know and I’ll send you some ideas!
We had a great time at our Halloween social! It was so fun to see all of the costumes. We played some Halloween math games and got to watch a movie in the afternoon. Thanks to Home and School, we were able to enjoy popcorn and water during our movie. Thank you to everyone who sent in delicious treats/candy; everyone enjoyed them!
Report cards will be sent home on November 12th. If you have any questions, please let me know! There will NOT be a science grade on the report cards because we are just now starting our science unit.
Important dates:
November 4th - End of the first quarter.
November 12th - Look for your child’s report card in your Thursday Folder.
November 13th - No school (teacher In-service)
November 16th- Book orders are due!
November 25th -27th: No school. Happy Thanksgiving!
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email or call! Let's have a great November!

Hello!
We've had a great start to the school year. It has been a blast getting to know all of your children! Here's what we have going on in our classroom:
- Social Studies: We are talking about communities and cardinal directions. Each child got a chance to either make their own compass rose out of classroom materials or to draw their own treasure map. They all turned out great! We were also able to take a virtual tour around Luxemburg.
- Math: We have begun our math workshop. We use centers in math workshop so that students get a chance to practice their skills using a variety of tools such as our tablets, manipulatives, and even white boards. These various centers allow me to spend one-on-one time with each child to help them in areas they need help with. Make sure to ask your child what rotations they got to visit each day!
- Reader's/Writer's Workshop: We're getting a lot of practice working on our Daily Five rotations as well as brainstorming ideas to write about. We have been practicing read to self, and work on writing! Next up is our read to someone rotation. I have such a great group of writers and readers; it's easy to see that they love it! Keep filling up those reading logs!
- Spelling: We had our first spelling test last week. I hope the kids are enjoying the spelling homework sheets that they can pick activities from! Please have your children study their spelling words whenever they have some free time. Lets keep up the good work!
Important dates:
Conferences - Thursday 10/15 and Friday 10/16 **You will get your time slot for your conference in the next Thursday folder. Keep your eyes peeled!
Resch Center Mass- Wednesday 10/21. The kids are so excited for this opportunity. Please remember to send a bag lunch!
Halloween Social - Friday 10/30
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to email or call! Lets have a great October!
